The Mercers' Company's connection with religious worship dates from its earliest times. Several ancient trusts provided for the preaching of sermons in Mercers' Chapel. The sermons preached at the services preceding the General Court and the Court for the election of the Master are still today provided for, under the gift of John Bancks in 1619. Other gifts and bequests for sermons were amalgamated and two public sermons are now preached in Mercers' Chapel each year, one in Advent and one in Lent.
